The action by which the wick candle draws the fuel to the flame is known as capillary action. The “fuel”, which is usually a type of wax, is drawn up the wick of the wick candle and when it reaches the flame, it vaporizes and subsequently burns. This is how the wick candle draws its energy and maintains the flame. Although, wicks have varying characteristics including tethering, fire-resistance, diameter, and fire-resistance. A candle which utilizes wicks to maintain and even perpetuate a flame is known as a wick candle.

Candle Wick:
1. Core Wick Candle: This wick candle utilizes a self-supporting wick, which is usually composed of cotton, paper, or zinc. Zinc is the most rigid, while paper and cotton are less supportive and are thus less common. To increase the rigidity of the candle, it is recommended that the wick candle be pre-waxed. Lastly, this type of wick candle is found in containers, votives, and pillars.

2. HTP Wick Candle: This type of wick candle “combines the benefits of a self-trimming wick with the rigidity found in core wick candles”. Thus it has the increased rigidity of a core wick candle as well as the efficiency of a self-trimmed wick candle. This type of wick candle is used in combination with vegetable wax and Penreco oil.

3. Flat Braid Wick Candle: A flat braid wick candle is essentially a free standing candle such as pillar and tapers. Its special design, which incorporates a slight bend, is optimized to create an even burn as well as lessen the effect of “mushrooming” at the tip.

4. CD Series Wick Candle: This wick candle is “coreless, non-directional, flat braid style wick” with a synthetic paper filament woven around it. This unique design of wick is designed to lengthen the burning time. Although this is a very durable and versatile wick, it is most efficient when used with a hardened wax (vegetable base).

There are numerous types of candles, and each wick candle utilizes a different variation of wick.
